Posted by admin on May 25, 2010

I’ve recently discovered the wonderful world of of yurts and yurt holidays

I am fascinated by the idea of living in a yurt and all of the benefits of this type of lifestyle, such as living closer to nature, living in a round building, being self sustainable and living off the grid.

There are yurt holidays, springing up all over the world.  Now you can go for a holiday getaway and stay in a yurt and experience what living in a yurt is like.

I would love to experience what it is like to stay in a yurt and experience this type of lifestyle.

I’m going to research and find out all I can about yurt holidays, like where you can go and stay in a yurt on a yurt holiday, the types of yurts and yurt holidays that are available, how you live in a yurt, yurts for sale and all sorts of other things yurt related.

I hope we have a fabulous journey together discovering the joys of yurt holidays.

Yurt holidays and “squrts” – variation on a theme.

Posted by admin on Jul 16, 2010

A while back I wrote about yurt holidays hitting the music festival scene.  Fabulous idea.

Well today I’m going to tell you about the “squrt”.  As the name suggests there is indeed a relationship to the beloved yurt.

The “squrt” was the brainchild again of Justine and Simon from Yurts and Squrts.  Originally they designed the squrt as a children’s playhouse for the garden.  But now squrts have also become another offering for the festival scene.

But what exactly is the squrt?

A squrt is a smaller variation of a yurt that fits two people.  The squrts designed and handmade by Justine and Simon are 9 feet in diameter, so they are a lot smaller.  Yurts and Squrts say they are the “fun and quirky miniature yurts” and designed “to provide an unforgettable, luxury camping experience.”

For UK festivals, the squrts come in two designs.  A curved blue roof and white squrf (think smurf in squrt!) and secondly the straight roof poled green and white ones.  Like their yurts, squrts have a fully fitted watertight groundsheet.

There is the cosy furnished festival option which includes a cosy floor covering of rugs, fluffy sheepskins, coordinated cushions and even a hand made table lantern with tea lights.

Wow what a fantastic way to experience yurt holidays – sounds fabulous!

Squrts, like their big sister the yurt, get to stay in the ‘luxury camping” fields which means the joy of access to clean toilet facilities and showers at most festival events.  A very different scenario to what most of us are used to with the festival experience!

Prices depend on the festival.  But you are looking at paying £265 for an unfurnished squrt to £355 for a furnished squrt which fits two people.

Sounds perfect if you are looking for a smaller model of the yurt to have that luxury camping festival experience.

Have you tried a yurts or squrts at a festival?  I would love to hear your yurt holidays experiences if you have.

Yurt holidays and courses – learn something new!

Posted by admin on Jul 8, 2010

Maybe you want to learn something new and stretch yourself a little while you’re enjoying your next holiday.  Yurt holidays have an eclectic mix (as expected!) of courses on offer for you to choose from if this is your thing.

Yurt lovers tend to have a strong connection with nature.  So many of the courses offered centre around this theme.

Some courses work in direct contact with nature for example bush crafts and bush activities.  You may want to learn more about living in the wild, how to forage, gather and cook wild bush foods.  You may want to learn how to light a fire without using lighters or matches or even learn how to make shelters.

Or perhaps you have the desire to know more about your local natural environment by learning about the flora and fauna or a course on bird watching.

Cooking courses are quite popular on yurt holidays.  From simple fresh break making courses to learning to cook wild bush foods or learning how to cook over the trusty bush fire.

Being in the nature, working with the element of wood is also a popular theme.  Courses on offer include bushcraft skills such as spoon carving and bow making.

Naturally yurt holidays have one very important course on offer: how to build yurts.  If you are interested in making your own yurt, many yurt holiday sites offer yurt building courses from how to find wood, steam wood and how to assemble the yurt.

Being an eclectic bunch, yurt lovers tend to have many healing and alternative forms of therapy courses on offer.  Such as massage, shamanism and even sound therapy.  Then there are the classic mind body disciplines such as yoga, meditation and if you have the courage… fire walking!

Art often features on the agenda at yurt holidays with courses on mosaics and painting.  Even music workshops are available like music technology courses.

Yurt holidays are the perfect way to take a holiday and learn something new at the same time.  Simply google “yurt holidays” and the your desired course to find what you are looking for.

Have you learnt something new while on a yurt holiday?  I would love to hear your experiences if you have.

What’s your idea of yurt holiday perfection?

Posted by admin on Jun 30, 2010

What’s your idea of the perfect yurt holiday?  Think about all the things you would like to do and then see if they fit in with a yurt holiday.  Or maybe think about what your preferred nature spot would be and work it from there.

If you are a beach buff, there are many yurt holiday locations situated on the beach or close to the coast.  That way you can get in all the regular beach activities like swimming, surfing, snorkling and fishing.  Depending on the location there may also be dolphin and whale spotting and other special activities.

Maybe you are more off a mountain or forrest type of person.  With yurt holidays situated in the mountains or forests depending on the climate there are many activities possible.  You may simply like to take a hike or walk.  If cycling is more your thing you could go on a mountain biking expedition.

Depending on the climate, if there is water nearby there may be waterfalls, springs and rivers awaiting your discovery.  If there is a river you could go swimming or canoeing.

If you like animals, some yurt holidays are situated on farms with farm animals.  Other yurt holidays have safari type settings and one even has a “zoobservatory” to observe the animals.  Or you could go horse riding or enjoy a spot of bird watching.

If you are in need of some rest and relaxation there is much to do staying onsite without moving.  Relax by the pool and in the hot tub.  Work on your sun tan.  Read a great book.  Snooze in a hammock. Enjoy the tranquil surroundings of nature with the birds singing.  Pick your own organic vegetables from the vegetable patch.  Fall asleep under the twinkling stars.  Watch the sun come up.   Watch the sun go down and enjoy the sunset.  Relax around the campfire or wood stove in your yurt.  Or even bond over the campfire with your family and friends telling campfire stories and engaging in singing sessions as is tradition at some yurt holiday sites.

Yurt holidays often have a theme of well being and pampering.  Have a relaxing aromatherapy massage and do a spot of yoga or tai chi.  Or broaden your mind and take a course on offer at the yurt holiday site.

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous you could venture out to local sites.  Explore the local villages and other historic and renowned sites.

Yurt holidays come in a variety and eclectic mix of all sorts of shapes and sizes.  Many options and services are available which cater to diverse desires.   Do your research well to have the perfect yurt holiday experience.

Fancy a little pampering on your yurt holiday?

Posted by admin on Jun 23, 2010

As if staying in a yurt wasn’t enough in itself.  The circular building that gives that sense of being nourished and supported, the sense of being and living with the nature, the view of the twinkling stars at night and the sound of the fire blazing away.  Sounds fabulous!

But it gets better!

Some yurt holidays are taking it a step further.  Certain yurt holiday locations have added extra special touches to make it even more pleasurable and enjoyable.

Think yurt holiday combined with pampering and treating yourself!

Yes, some yurt holiday sites are offering many retreat like services making for the ultimate break in nature while receiving a little pampering at the same time.

Some sites are now offering mind body classes such as meditation, yoga or thai chi.  Practicing yoga or meditation in a natural environment with nature is always special.

Therapies are also on offer.  Treat yourself to a massage.  Or try an aromatherapy massage which uses essential oils.  Or a reflexology session which is a type of massage focusing on the reflex points of the feet.  Or how about a Reiki session which is an energetic treatment?

Imagine being in your yurt and having your massage therapist come to you.  Some yurt holiday locations even offer this.  No you having to go to them – they come to you!

Other yurt holidays offer detoxification and rejuvenation retreats.  Imagine detoxing in tranquility and peace with the nature while you can meditate and unwind at the same time.

Many yurt holidays also offer organic, vegetarian, vegan and raw foods.  Some sites even have organic vegetable patches where you can pick your own vegetables!

If you are searching for this type of yurt holiday, simply search for yurt holiday and the additional service you are interested in for example “yurt holiday”+”yoga” etc in your preferred search engine.

So why not create your ultimate yurt holiday with whatever you desire be it pampering, unwinding or a detox?

I would love to hear if you have had a little yurt holiday pampering and what it was.

Music enters the world of yurt holidays

Posted by admin on Jun 16, 2010

Yurt holidays and music?  How do the two mix you may be asking.  Well, with the music festival season almost upon us something is brewing in the world of yurts.  Yurts are moving into the realms of music festivals!

Huh?

Yes, music festivals.

Instead of doing the traditional go to Glastonbury (or insert festival of your choice), getting soaked, flooded out and going for mud baths, now there is a new, much more civilized option.

Enter the world of yurts.

Certain ingenious and alternative thinking companies such as Yurts and Squrts have come up with a solution to the dreaded mud and soggy tent scenario and are now offering yurt accommodation at a selection of festivals.  Now there is “luxury camping” by way of yurt at some of the festivals.

Justine and Simon, the founders of Yurts and Squrts (http://www.yurtsandsqurts.com) were previous yurt makers and dwellers who decided that luxury festival accommodation was the way forward and they were sure they weren’t alone in this way of thinking:

“Our mini-yurts are popping up at festivals and events all over the country and are changing the experience of festival camping as you know it!  Soggy, cramped and noisy fields are a thing of the past. In the luxury camping field you can expect plenty of space to chill out, and extra facilities such as hot showers and posh loos for your convenience, plus our smiley helpful staff to make sure you have a great stay.”

What a way to experience yurt holidays.  Ok, its slightly different to the traditional yurt holiday in that your interaction with the nature and wildlife (ie the festival goers) will be a little different (!) but what a magnificent way to experience a yurt and enjoy music festivals.

Yurts and Squrts will be available at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, Camp Bestival, Leeds Fest Cornbury, T in the Park, Solfest, Rockness, 80s Rewind and the Acoustic Festival of Great Britain and many more.

Have you tried yurting by festival?  Would love to hear your experiences.

Yurt Holidays – the great holiday getaway.

Posted by admin on Jun 9, 2010

Yurt holidays are becoming an increasing popular holiday getaway, take a break, unwind and get back to nature.  Imagine a spectacular surrounding of your choice.  It might be with oceanic views, or even right on the beach.  Or perhaps you prefer something in the mountains with a spectacular valley view.  Or maybe being in a forrest nestled amongst the trees is more your style.  Whatever the surrounding, it will usually have a close connection to the natural environment, meaning you will be close to nature.

Yurt holiday locations will typically be a secluded spot which means you can enjoy the tranquility and connection with nature.  You can hear the birds sing, you can go for long walks, you can enjoy all the things that come with living amongst the natural wildlife.

Inside your yurt you will experience the feeling of being inside a circular building.  A circular building is a very different sensation to what we normally experience with squares, rectangles, corners and angular buildings.

Some say that circular buildings are much better for the human energetic systems and our aura!  I don’t know if that’s true, but there is something special about being inside a circular structure.

Imagine drifting off to sleep underneath the twinkling stars.  Inside your yurt you can do just that.  The top of the yurt can be opened up so you can see the stars at night.  Sleeping under the stars can be simply majestic.

Many yurts, being attuned to green living have wood fire stoves for heating and cooking.
Imagine watching the flames dancing and falling asleep to the roaring fire.  What a way to drift off to sleep.

Coming from Mongolian tradition, many yurt owners like to keep in tune with the Eastern vibe.  In some yurts you will find beautiful Mongolian furniture, rugs, wall hangings, fabrics and cushions to make a very cosy environment.

Then for the ecologically conscious on this type of holiday getaway you will be delighted to find yourself under a solar shower and using a compost toilet.  Not all yurts are this kitted up, but many are.

If you want to get back to nature and experience the elements in comfort or even luxury as is the case of some yurt locations then yurt holidays is definitely something to try.
